An awesome first grader worked on this design for a few minutes each art class since the beginning of the year. Now that's determination!

Art is a Piece of Cake!

5th grade learned about the yummy art of Wayne Thiebaud.  He is famous for painting cakes, pies, cookies, lollipops, and other delicious treats. We looked at how he applies thick oil paint to his paintings to mimic the look of icing. Instead of drawing the cakes and pies, we built them out of clay!  We built a triangular prism using slab construction.  We did not attach the lid so the boxes can be used to hold small objects.  We discussed art that is decorative vs. functional.  Luckily, our cake slices are both! Students used their sketches from the first class to decorate their pieces of cake, er...art. Check out the pieces waiting to dry and be fired in the kiln.
Some students chose to create a cupcake instead of slices of cake.

Gotta love the letter stamps I found in the teacher giveaway pile that forms at the end of the school year!

It doesn't get more "Philly" than a pretzel, right?

I can't wait to see these painted! We are going to make cake plates for them to display around the school.
