An awesome first grader worked on this design for a few minutes each art class since the beginning of the year. Now that's determination!

Spectacular Secondary Pumpkins

First, we read the wonderful color theory book, "Mouse Paint" by Ellen Stoll Walsh.  The students learn that the primary colors make new colors when two are mixed together.  We tested this out by doing three paintings, a purple (12"x12"), an orange (9"x9"), and a green (6"x4.5").

The next week we look at the shape of pumpkins and discover most pumpkins have lumps and bumps.  Students use their green paper to tear a bumpy horizon line.  The orange paper is perfect for the star of the artwork, the pumpkin.

Next, students add jack-o-lantern faces and details to the background of the artwork.

The artwork is being displayed with 2nd grade's Perspective Pumpkin drawings.
