An awesome first grader worked on this design for a few minutes each art class since the beginning of the year. Now that's determination!

The Cardinals Have Arrived!

2nd grade recently learned about the habits and living environment of the cardinal.  The cardinal is famous for its bright red feathers and black face.  Some students even remarked that the cardinal looks like he has a mohawk!

2nd grade has been focusing on background, middleground, and foreground all year in art, and I think it shows they have got it down!  Thanks to www.deepspacesparkle.com for the wonderful inspiration!
First, students looked at the shape of the cardinal.  We added branches behind the cardinal(s).  Students made the artist decision about number of cardinals, what direction they faced, and how much to focus on the cardinal.

Then came the painting!  Students painted in the beautiful winter sky first, branches second, and cardinal last with tempera paints.  The next lesson we went in with oil pastels to trace the pencil lines in black and color the face and beak.  Students also got a lesson on shading the underside of branches with oil pastels.  Then came the fun part-SNOW!  Students had to think about which side of the branch would collect snow, and they painted the tops of branches with snow.  Lastly, we used toothbrushes to spritz on a snowy finish.

Wow, our winter display looks wonderfu!  The animated penguins are thanks to 1st grade.
